This is the constant struggle I see here when it comes to getting projects off the ground or getting any positive changes to happen around here. No one wants to take the lead. Why? Here are several reasons I observed over time.
The leader is left holding the bag. This means as soon as people see that one person is willing to lead a project, they assume that the person in question has all the answer and will do all the work. Let’s clarify a leader’s role here: For those who love to leave such leader to do everything OR for that “leader” who thinks they HAVE to do everything. In my humble opinion, real leadership involves inspiring a team to work together for the project or change they are involved in. They help utilize the strengths of the individuals involved and share the responsibility and the credit for a job well done! A real leader is not in it for the glory but in it for the positive change they hope to see come out of it.
Most are afraid to get all the blame if something fails or they are just afraid of failure so they don’t bother taking the risk to lead the group. If you follow the motto from the previous point, that everyone has equal responsibility then they have to share the blame if something fails. Everyone in the team should be able to own up to the failures as much as the successes in any project they participate in. The leader should be able to admit defeat where needed, pick themselves up, dust themselves off and try again and the team should support them in this.
Mind you this is the ideal that I am bringing out in my points, but if everyone kept that in mind, perhaps there would be more people who would be willing to step up to the plate.
The other main issue that I have observed is that PARTICIPATION in activities / projects is low. Many people want to leave it up to another to work on getting activities, fundraisers, sport events and all that it entails up to someone else. I see the same people, all the time who do these things. It would be nice to see more people join in and help.
Instead I see people who complain that NOTHING is getting done. There is a quote running around on Facebook that I totally agree with; “Life has no remote. Get up and change it yourself.”
So instead of complaining that you are not getting the answers you want on something, no activities for certain groups are being done, that you don’t agree with the changes that are done without your consent or input, then GET UP OFF YOUR COMPLAINING ASS AND CHANGE IT!
I am trying to do my part. My strengths are in my words, written or spoken. I offer myself to help speak on behalf of others at times, but not without their input and participation! I know people are counting on me and I try hard to do as much as I can, to the best of my abilities, but I can’t do it alone. I am a team player. I myself have been guilty of leaving up to others, but I am changing this. It’s not easy but when I see the successes come out of it or I learn a lesson out of the failures, I KNOW it’s worth it.
For those who are all talk and no action: PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS AND PARTICIPATE! Do something! LEAD by example! PARTICIPATE and do your part! It’s not all up to just one person. It’s up to all of us to make things happen.
